The Kingwood Mustangs boys won the 2009 5A Texas UIL Swimming and Diving State Championships on Feb. 28 without winning a single individual or relay event. It was their third 5A title in the last five years.
Kingwood accomplished the feat by placing second in all three relays and depth in their individual events. The Mustang boys won the Class 5A title at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas-Austin with 200 points, followed by Plano with 170 and Round Rock with 154.
Senior Austin Wilson led the Mustangs with four second place finishes. He was out-touched in the 50 and 100 freestyle and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays by a combined time of just .37 seconds for the four races. His anchor leg of the 200 freestyle relay was a blazing 19.99 seconds. Wilson’s teammates on the 200 free relay were: Jordan Jones, Taylor Kneisley and Kyle Sorge.
